Under First Nations Skies

This event provides a unique opportunity for the community to engage with both Indigenous knowledge systems and contemporary astronomical achievements. The evening will feature Tim Patston, Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, presenting on Indigenous astronomy, including the cultural significance of constellations and celestial stories from First Nations' traditions, often referred to as Dreaming stories. Tim will explore how these narratives have informed navigation, seasonal understanding, and cultural practices for thousands of years, providing participants with an authentic perspective on the deep connection between First Nations communities and the night sky. In addition to Indigenous astronomical knowledge, Tim will highlight Australia's contributions to global astronomy, including the achievements of Australian Nobel Prize-winning scientists and the nation's involvement in significant milestones such as the first Moon landing. This dual focus underscores the event's commitment to fostering scientific literacy while celebrating cultural heritage. Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to observe the night sky through our high-powered BIG 30" Dobsonian telescopes, guided to identify both First Nations constellations and scientifically significant celestial objects. This hands-on component encourages experiential learning, community engagement, and cross-cultural understanding. By combining cultural storytelling with scientific exploration, this event aims to promote respect for Indigenous heritage, and enhance community knowledge of astronomy. Finally, attendees will be invited to explore the Centre's newly renovated exhibit, a refreshed and engaging space that many community members will be experiencing for the first time. Our targeted outcomes for this event will be to strengthen community understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems and cultural heritage. Also, to promote awareness of Australian contributions to science and astronomy and provide a hands-on educational experience for participants which community members may not have experienced before. By offering this as a free event at a world-renowned, top-tier tourist facility, we aim to ensure that our local community feels valued, included, and welcomed, fostering a sense of pride and connection to this exceptional cultural and scientific space.
