Message from the Premier of Western Australia
On 26 January each year Australians come together to celebrate Australia Day and reflect on our heritage, our future and our local, national and international achievements.
Western Australians celebrate the day with passion and pride around the State. This passionate celebration has become the largest single event in the nation. Australians of all ages gather together to celebrate in a uniquely Australian way with a barbeque, game or cricket or picnic at the beach.
It is also a time when people who have decided to make Australia their home choose to become Australian citizens at ceremonies held around the State. Local governments are at the forefront of Australia Day celebrations, arranging festivities, flag raising ceremonies, citizenship ceremonies and the presentation of Australia Day Awards.
Each year, individual citizens, groups or events that have made an outstanding contribution to their community are recognised in the Premier's Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards. In recognising the outstanding contributions people make at the local level, these awards foster active citizenship and reinforce Australian pride and spirit.
Being an active citizen means being concerned about your community and joining with others to make it a better place. A healthy Australian society depends on the active involvement of its citizens in contributing to the growth and wellbeing of the community.
I encourage you to get actively involved in community Australia Day activities and also in the Premier's Australia Day Active Citizenship Awards, by nominating inspirational members or groups from your local area.
