Community and Group team games

How easy is it?

Low to medium

Functions of the activity: Fun and opportunities for community involvement, Lead up activities, On the day activities

Examples of events

  • ‘Old sports’ oriented Australia Day activities focusing on local (benign!) rivalries—between towns/localities/sporting groups/clubs/schools/ businesses/
  • Tug of war
  • ‘Fire fighter’ relay
  • Tractor pulls
  • Human machines/Iron man/Iron woman
  • Water sports
  • Debates
  • Sports orienteering

Key processes (what needs to be done?)

  1. Start well ahead (four to five months) and remember most groups will have down time over Dec/Jan
  2. Australia Day Medallions or certificates for winners, mayor or similar to make presentations.
  3. Australia Day merchandise (see: http://www.australiaday.org.au/whatson/sa/page151.asp or   http://www.ausdaywa.com.au/merch_entry3.htm). Supermarkets and service stations also sell Australian themed merchandise in the lead up to Australia Day.

Anticipated positive outcomes

Can get groups to organise themselves entirely if promoted/started far enough ahead

Easy to attract local sponsors
