On Australia Day 2009, more than 13,000 new Australian citizens made a public pledge of their commitment to Australia at citizenship ceremonies around the nation.

Sixty of these new citizens were presented with their Certificate of Australian citizenship at the National Citizenship Ceremony by the Prime Minister, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP.

Australian Citizenship Place, commemorating 60 years of Australian Citizenship, was opened on Lake Burley Griffin on 26 January 2009 by the Governor-General of Australia Her Excellency Quentin Bryce AC.

The Australian National Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony, held on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra, has established a ceremonial tradition on our national day.

The Australian Flag Raising and Australian Citizenship Ceremony will again be held this coming Australia Day Tuesday, 26 January 2010.

Guests at the ceremony are also encouraged to make the Australian Affirmation on Australia Day. The Australian Affirmation provides citizens with the opportunity to reaffirm their commitment to Australian citizenship.
