George Lekakis

Since September 2011, George was appointed the CEO of Fronditha Care, an aged care provider employing 460 people, who support elderly persons in residential care and in their own homes. Prior to this, George had been appointed by the Victorian Government as the Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission in September 2001. George managed the expansion of the Commission’s work to include the development and implementation of the Victorian Multicultural Act 2004, the Community Grants program, the Cultural Precincts and Community Infrastructure Enhancement Fund, Celebrate Diversity Week, the Awards for Excellence in Multicultural Affairs, Community Harmony and Interfaith Initiatives and the Vulnerable Refugee Support Program.

George has previously served as the Chairperson of the Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria. He was also the Director of the Southern Region Migrant Resource Centre and the New Hope Foundation. He has served on many government and community-based boards and committees of management, including Future Melbourne Leaders, the Victorian Industrial Relations Taskforce, and Community Support Fund Advisory Council and also served as a member of the Social Security Appeals Tribunal.

Most recently, George was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to the community through leadership roles in multicultural organisations and to the development and implementation of services to support those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Mr Lekakis has formal qualifications in social work and nursing.
